Scotscan users – those holding an @Scot address – are being urged to use Google Authenticator to ensure an extra layer of security at log-in.

The process involves a two-stage verification process which requires not just your password but also a secondary verification code.

Your log-in username is your email address.

You can add extra security of a 4 digit pin number of your choice for sending and withdrawing.

The Scotcoin Project CIC’s Cyber Security Consultant, Brian Mackay, commented:

’Security is obviously of uppermost importance for us at Scotcoin and The Scotcoin Project CIC. By using Google Authenticator holders are able to strengthen the security around their Scotcoin assets.

‘Google Authenticator offers a lot of benefits. The second tier verification  process will mitigate any password vulnerabilities adding a second level of defence. It is also good for phishing prevention for the same reason. Google Authenticator also works without internet access with code being generated via the Authenticator App.

‘It is also relatively easy to set up with instructions provided by Google to link your account to an authentication app or a registered device.

‘There are also options available when it comes to receiving your verification code including via app, SMS text message or a phone call.

‘Google Authenticator is not solely limited to Google accounts and many other platforms support Google Authenticator.

‘I am very persuaded that adding Google Authenticator – also known as Google Authentication and Google 2-Step Verification – for Scotscan holders is something they should consider and then act on.

‘We also recommend looking at steps 4 and 5 of the ‘How It Works’ Guide which can be accessed at: https://scotscan.io/how-it-works
